There was a big, cheerful gathering in the hotel's dining room with the chairman of the Western Province Referees' Society, Joey Klaaste-Salmans as host.
The president of the Western Province Rugby Union, Thelo Wakefield, who is due to end his term of office soon, was the guest of honour.
The speakers were Klaaste-Salmans, Wakefield and Keith Hendricks, the chairman of the South African Referees' Association. The mater of ceremonies was Arthur Southgate, the outgoing vice-chairman of the referees' society.
Each year, the main award of the evening is the naming of the Referee of the Year. This year it was Rasivhenge, a test referee, the youngest referee to referee a Currie Cup final and known throughout the world as a Sevens referee on World Rugby's international circuit.
He refereed the men's Sevens final at the 2016 Olympic Games and was named as World Rugby's Referee of the Year along with Spain's Alhambra Nievas.
