"Short cut."

The Cheetahs go right against the Stormers. Fred Zeilinga passes to Armandt Koster who passes to Niel Marais (12). Dillyn Leyds (11) of the Stormers stops Niel Marais without bringing him to ground. Niel Marais gets a pass away to prop Charles Marais. As Dan du Plessis of the Stormers tackles him, Charles Marais gets a pass inside to Niel Marais who is tackled by Pieter-Steph du Toit. First player to the tackle is Dillyn Leyds who bends to pick up the ball but is removed by Basson and Henco Venter. The referee penalises Leyds for taking a short cut into the tackle.

When Leyds actually bends to the ball both of his feet are four behind the tackle. He got to the right place.

It may well be that the referee's legalism was by the book but surely if this is the standard for the match, there would be few aftertackles not penalised.

Rugby football is surely not a game of calipers and magnifying glasses.

After all we allow players in front of kickers at kick-offs, foot-up and skew put-ins at scrums and a vague place for taking penalties and free kicks. advert
